2020 Update

The events of 2020 only highlight the deep inequality and injustice that are built into our society and systems.

School closures had a profound impact on everyone. Parents, teachers, and children all over the world found their lives suddenly upended. More than one billion children worldwide couldn’t go to school. Because of your support, when schools were forced to close, we were able to meet the surge in demand and rapidly respond with new and continually expanding resources.

Tragically and unsurprisingly, school closures amplified the existing inequalities in education. Our children aren’t just facing a summer of learning loss but an unprecedented gap in their education—a gap that disproportionately impacts Black, Latinx, and low-income communities.

As a nonprofit tackling the systemic inequality in education, we must recognize and work to change the profound damage of racism. We at Khan Academy stand firmly in solidarity with the Black community and the Black Lives Matter movement in the fight against racism.

We believe education is an important catalyst for both personal learning and systematic change. We are committed to doing the work to learn and grow as an organization so we can better serve the students who need us most.

Our mission is to provide a free, world-class education to anyone, anywhere. Khan Academy exists to help all learners, but most especially students without access to the educational resources they need to achieve their full potential. Our mission has never felt more urgent or more necessary. Together we will work to make it a reality.
